Mal is the Captain of Serenity.Mal was born on Shadow and all we know he was raised by his mother and About 40 ranch hands.(What happened to the original bio -- placed here by someone else and removed -- is a mystery to me, it was good, so I'll try and re-do it!)Mal was once very religious and believed in God and Jesus, but he lost his belief with the Battle of Serenity Valley, which the Brown Coats losts.Mal is a Brown Coat. A Rebel. Up against the alliance. He's a loose cannon and likes it that way. He's lost in the woods and likes it because that's the only place he can see his way in!Mal blames God, not the situation that was, for the devistating loss of the Brown Coats to the Alliance. One has to assess blame and Mal does. Mal blames God for their loss.It seems like each year around U day Mal finds himself in a bar that's filled with Alliance supporters toasting Unification day so he can, not drink with them and start a fight, usually with Zoe, who's his good right arm.Mal has all sorts of reasons as to why they lost, from there is no God to maybe we shouldn't have picked up the weak and stragglers to use as a reason for why they lost.Mal resents the loss and bought Serenity, his Firefly ship, to get as far away from the Alliance as he can.Mal fights from a very personal and emotional point of view, which is usually to the contrary of his good right arm Zoe, who is far more realistic and pragmatic, even though she'll throw good reason to the wind and follow Mal into hells fires because he has a gut feeling. It's this gut feeling that irks Badger, Niska, Jayne, Mingo, Fanty, Wash and even Inara. But Mal swears by it and Zoe goes along with it.Mal takes on Dr. Simon Tam and his sister River, even though he doesn't like Simon that much, but he has an affinity for River, whom he releases from cryo-stasis.Mal has problems with Bester, his first mechanic, Jayne, to a small degree, Inara, whom he secretly loves a lot, Simon, whom he has respect for, but he likes River, Simon's young moon brained sister, Kaylee, the ship mechanic and Shepard Book.Zoe, of course, has no equal. She is the only one Mal would die for and not because he has sexual desires for her, but because she's his platonic partner in life and partner in war and partner in crime. Zoe stands shoulder to shoulder with him, even if he's wrong.Mal is the kind of guy who tries to do what is best, even when faced with a naked, buxom and willing woman like Saffron, who tricked him into marriage so she could steal his ship. When faced with her charms he tries to do what is right, even though he gives in to his manly side which could end up making him burn in the special level of hell as Book warns him.Even though Mal has feelings for Inara, who keeps him at arms length, he still makes love to her best friend, Nandy, but has issues when Inara discovers this event.Mal loses his point of focus as a Captain and Hero when faced with being just a man, none the less he's still a person who still stands up for what is right. In the movie Serenity Mal holds on to River and Simon, even though reason dictates he shouldn't.In the movie Serenity Mal regains his belief in what is right by standing and siding with River Tam in his firm belief that the Alliance can't decide what makes a better person and what justifies a world without sin. Mal chooses to misbehave, because it is the proper thing to do. He side's with Jayne and Shepard Book in the conclusion that if you can't do something right, so something smart. Mal, when pushed, and not always, can be very smart.Mal is a very flawed, but rightious, person.
