Bet is Nancy's best friend and maybe her younger sister. She is a former pickpocketer of Fagin's and meets Oliver on the same day that Nancy does. In the film she does little beyond taking part in three musical numbers. In the play, she is one of the first to discover Nancy's body after Bill has murdered her, but in the film, she disappears from the story right after the last scene in the tavern, not even showing up among the crowd that watches Sikes try to escape. In Dickens's original novel, she suffers a morbid fate: after finding Nancy's body she has a complete emotional breakdown and is taken to a mental asylum. Show less «
