His ability and determination, but also his courage, will end by propelling him into the high sphere of society. His marriage with a beautiful English widow will expose his lewd character, but he proves to be a very loving and warm father. While he loves immensely his biological son, he has an overt hate and disdain for his stepson, which will eventually lead to his painful and brusque downfall. Devastated after the death of his son in an accident, he will have to face his stepson, who challenge him in a duel in which Berry loses his foot. Subsequently, his stepson chases him and Barry will make a living as a gambler; but the voice-over mentions his chance has left him, implying he died in misery.
