Archer Maggott is a frightening man with a history of violence against women. He is retrieved from military prison with an offer of a pardon if he will participate in a highly dangerous commando raid: a stealth attack on a chateau occupied by German officers in occupied France. His mentality and behavior match the classic profile of a serial killer, except that his hatred is public for all to see. He believes women are the root of all evil, and fervently longs to kill them. He cites Bible verses as justifications for his anger. He is also a racist, making derogatory remarks to the black men in his unit. He continually sneers scathing remarks and threats of violence, with no thought of remorse or consideration. When Reisman brings some women to the camp for the men to socialize , Maggott is assigned to watch duty in a high tower, so that he cannot harm them. He spends the evening hysterically shouting Bible verses and curses at the men and women at the party below. At the climax of the movie, the attack, he betrays the unit when a woman falls into his clutches. The Germans sound the alarm, resulting in the deaths of most of the soldiers.
