He is best known as a patron of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was born in Vienna on May 31, 1732 a Graf (or Count) of Wallsee (a town in present-day Austria) and Melz (a municipality in present-day Germany). He was educated at Theresian Military Academy, studied philosophy at the University of Vienna, and theology at the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome. He resigned on April 14, 1772, one month after being elected Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, under pressure from the Imperial Court. As shown in Amadeus , Colloredo was a cold autocratic who tolerated no opposition or even suggestions from the men he appointed to various posts. In May 1781, after years of simmering tensions, he finally dismissed Mozart from his employ. He fled Salzburg in 1801 as Napoleon invaded Austria, but remained Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg until Salzburg was secularized in 1803. He died on May 20, 1812 in Vienna.
