Annina Brandel is a young Bulgarian woman married to Jan. The young couple are able to escape Bulgaria and make the expensive passage to Casablanca, where they wait for their fate. Desperate to get out, Annina contemplates sleeping with Renault to obtain exit visas while Jan gambles away most of their money in the blind hope that he will win more. When she asks American cafe owner Rick for advice, he tries to be cynical and tell her to go back to Bulgaria, but later he rigs his own roulette wheel in Jan's favor and they win enough money to pay Renault for their exit visas.
