Anne Bonny was a real-life female pirate. According to some accounts, she was born in South Carolina in 1702, and was disowned by her family after marrying a sailor, James Bonny. She abandoned Bonny in favor of the pirate Calico Jack Rackham; she helped Rackham steal a sloop and raise a crew. The entire crew was captured in in 1720 and sentenced to death by hanging. Anne's sentence was postponed when she plead her belly (claimed to be pregnant to avoid execution). Somehow, possibly ransomed by her family, she returned to South Carolina, re-married, and led a respectable life until she died in 1782.She was born in Ireland
