Amon is leader of a group called The Equalists whose main goal is to get rid of oppresive benders who attack and rob non-benders with their powers. Amon claims to have lost his family and face to a firebender when he was a child, though this is later revealed to be a lie. He is the main antagonist of the series. Amon also has the unique ability to take away a person's bending permanently, although this is a power usually only accessible to the Avatar. Amon wears a white mask with red markings and long black robes to hide his scars and identity. It was unknown who Amon really was and where he came from, until the first season finale, where Amon is revealed to be Noatak, a waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe. He is a skilled bloodbender, like his father Yakone, and his brother Tarrlok. He uses bloodbending to take a persons bending away, unlike the spirits as his original story stated. He painted a firebending scar onto his face to garner sympathy, showing the Equalists at a rally Korra and Mako attend, where Amon plans to rid the world of airbending forever At the age of 14 he ran away from home and became Amon, after being forced to bloodbend Tarrlok, and bloodbending and defying his father. After being airbent into the bay by Avatar Korra, he reveals himself to be a waterbender by trying to save himself. He trains non-benders the art of chi-blocking. Chi-blocking was first seen in The Last Airbender series and only Ty-Lee was able to do this by studying the body and blocking a person's chi temporarily causing them to lose their bending and/or become temporarily paralyzed.
