Al Simmons, born Albert Francis Simmons, was a US Marine turned highly trained assassin, hired by the CIA to clean up dangerous government secrets unknown to the public. Married to Wanda, he starts to heavily doubt the ethics and agendas of his employers when they set him on a mission that costs many innocent lives. Stating to his boss, Jason Wynn, that he wants out, he is put onto one last job where he is double-crossed and murdered.Sent straight to hell, he is given the ultimatum of leading demonic being Malebolgia's armies to Earth in order to regain his wife. Upon agreeing, he is sent back to Earth where he transforms into Spawn, the intended General of Hell's armies, but discovers that Malebolgia's messenger Clown/Violator had ordered Simmons dead for the deal to be made in the first place.Learning that time has moved on, and that so has Wanda, the unrecognisably burned and scarred Simmons finds it impossible to move on, causing Clown to use his estranged family as a wager to make sure that he does his job, eliminating Wynn and triggering the apocalypse.
