Bregna became the last city on a fictiitious version of Earth in 2011 A.D., after a virus annihilated 99% of its population. Approximately 5,000,000 people survived the virus and gathered in Bregna.
A man named Trevor Goodchild developed a cure for the virus, and his dynasty ruled Bregna for more than 400 years.
Trevor Goodchild's cure had a side effect; it left people sterile. The human species faced extinction, so he cloned people, including himself, to give humans a chance to develop a cure for their sterility. Once humans overcame their sterility, they could stop cloning themselves and go back to reproducing normally. To prevent people from realizing that they were sterile, he secretly drugged some women so that they would have the symptoms of pregnancy. Then he would secretly implant clone embryos in them so that they would think they were bearing children naturally. He taught this to his clone, who taught this to his clone and so on for 400 years.
Aeon Flux was a woman in Bregna in 2415. She was also one of the Monicans, a group of people who rebelled against Goodchild.
She had a sister named Una, who had a friend named Claudius. Officially, Una was allegedly killed for being a Monican, although she wasn't. The secret reason she was killed was because she was pregnant. Trevor Goodchild's brother, Oren (or rather, the clone descended from him, four hundred years later) discovered that people were naturally overcoming sterility, so he made them disappear, because he wanted to extend the reign of the clones (specifically, his own reign) indefinitely.
Aeon had a Monican partner named Sithandra, who had hands instead of feet.
Aeon Flux was a clone, descended by cloning, from Katherine, who was Trevor Goodchild's wife circa 2010.
Much of this information is found in Aeon Flux: The Herodotus File, by Mark Mars and Eric Singer.
