As an alumna of Duke University, it's important to me to be here defending Title IX because I was deeply disappointed with the way my school handled gender-based violence. While I was on campus, Duke actually restricted reporting by shortening the amount of time after an incident survivors had to report sexual assault cases-and later only agreed to get rid of the statue after massive push back from students. In the past few years, the landscape has gradually changed at Duke and at schools around the country because survivors spoke up about their experiences, and because the federal government stepped up efforts to enforce students' civil rights.
