Spencer made his Broadway debut in the Aaron Sorkin drama, "The Farnsworth Invention," directed by Des McAnuff. He played the role of Stan and understudied Jimmi Simpson's role of Farnsworth. Spencer had the opportunity to go on as Farnsworth several times, opposite Hank Azaria. Later that year, Spencer played Rusty Charlie in the 2009 Broadway revival of "Guys And Dolls," also directed by McAnuff, Starring Lauren Graham and Oliver Platt.Spencer was mostly raised in San Diego, California, where he attended Point Loma High School and later, San Diego State University. In both high school and college, he made pottery which he sold at art fairs.Spencer plays several musical instruments. His favorite is the tenor ukulele.
