Smita worked in various capacities as a writer, assistant director, and creative associate on numerous programmes for leading national and international TV channels. She later joined the Film and Television Institute of India where she enrolled for the Screenplay Writing Course. Her script, Raat Akeli Hai, was among the top 10 finalists for the Mumbai Mantra-CineRise Screenwriting Programme 2015. Raat Akeli Hai has been acquired by Abhishek Chaubey and Honey Trehan's film production company - MacGuffin Pictures. She then worked on Netflix's first Indian Original - Sacred Games (2018), as one of the three writers.
