For MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter Shane Carwin, an athletic background has always been a constant presence throughout his life and career. As one of three sons raised by his mother, Shane graduated from two different colleges with two degrees. While attending college, Shane excelled in wrestling and also played football. In 2005, Shane Carwin began a career in the Mix Martial Arts field. He made his first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) debut at UFC #84 held in May 2008. The event was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. He won his match against fighter Christian Wellisch in .44 seconds of the first round. He quickly established his punching power through his display against Wellisch and at UFC #89, held in Birmingham, England in a match against Neil Wain. The latter match ended with Shane's win by TKO in 1:31 of their first round. As a fighter, trained in both boxing and wrestling styles, Shane would perhaps face a more unorthodox fighting style when he faced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu artist Gabriel Gonzage at UFC #96 held in May 2009 with Shane scoring the victory by knockout in .69 seconds of the first round. Five months later, Shane scheduled for a championship contender match at UFC #104 held in October. The winner would have gotten a title shot against the champion Brock Lesnar but the UFC changed the match card and instead set Shane to fight at UFC #106 in a championship match against Lesnar himself. However the match was canceled due to illness on the part of Lesnar. A UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship bout was arranged for UFC #111 for March 2010. That match set Shane to compete against Frank Mir, another notable fighter in the MMA community. Shane overcame Mir with a victorious knockout within the first round, thus becoming the Interim Heavyweight Champion. Four months later, Brock Lesnar returned and challenged for the Heavyweight Championship at UFC #116. Shane was recognized for dominating the early portion of their match before eventually submitting to Lesnar via an Arm Triangle Hold, thus handing Shane Carwin his first loss. Around the time of his next scheduled fight to be held at UFC #125, Shane bowed out of the match-up due to neck and back pain which later led to surgery performed during November 2010. Outside of the octagon, Shane Carwin also works as an engineer, a volunteer wrestling coach for the University of Northern Colorado and trains at the Grudge Training Center in Greeley, Colorado with top MMA coach Trevor Whittman.
