A childhood supporter of the Carlton Football Club, Docherty was originally drafted by the Brisbane Lions with their second pick (12th overall) in the 2011 AFL National Draft, making his debut in round 4 against North Melbourne in 2013. He played 13 games with the Lions before being traded to Carlton in 2013. In 2016 he was awarded the John Nicholl's Medal for the club's best and fairest player and named in the 40man squad for the All-Australian team, backing up with All-Australian selection in 2017. Unluck with injury, having twice ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season and ruling him out for both the 2019 and 2019 seasons, he was still endorsed as co-captain in 2018 along side Patrick Cripps.
