Sakina Deer was October, 1984 in Kingston, Jamaica to a single mother, Vilma Marie Vaughan. Deer was raised by her mother and grandparents Constance and Astor Vaughan. A precocious child, Sakina had dreams of becoming a medical doctor and pursued schooling at the prestigious Immaculate conception High and went on to begin a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences at the University of West Indies, Mona. Behind this dream however was her passion for the Arts which became evident when she began performing with local, non-profit ministry Father Holung and Friends at 14 years old. It was this exposure that fuelled her drive and encouraged her to become a part of the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company where she landed the lead of Dorothy in The Wiz, on her first audition. Following this role she was cast by Basil Dawkins Productions in her first commercial theatrical role as well as by Jambiz productions. Sakina was awarded the International Theatre Institute's coveted Actor Boy Award for her role in Patrick Brown's "If There's A Will, There's A Wife" in 2014. Her bubbly personality, professionalism and attention to artistic and character detail, sparked the interest of the premier television station, Television Jamaica (TvJ) , where she was asked to audition for and was given the position of Smile Jamaica, Its Morning Time , Television host as well as host of a summer feature, 876 Getaway. She has now become a household name and face in addition to being a sought after stage actress. In 2015 Sakina was invited to submit a video audition for the independent film "Dope Fiend" , which would be shot in New York and landed the principal female role. This began her journey into the world of film which since then has afforded a whirlwind off opportunities including the upcoming film "Sprinter". With over a decade of production experience on stage and backstage , before and behind the camera, Sakina has honed an intricate set of skills , making her an asset to any production. Show less «
