Ryan was born in Vancouver, Canada. His mother is Shirley Smale and his father (deceased) is Jim Smale. He has 3 half-siblings. He has English, Irish, Norwegian, Welsh and French ancestry.At a young age, Ryan decided he wanted to be an actor. He was fortunate in that his mother worked in the movie industry as Craft Service/First Aid for ten years in Vancouver. He visited all the sets she worked on and eagerly watched and learned from the pros.Ryan got his first role in the movie 'Damage' when he was 20, which was shot in Vancouver.He moved to Los Angeles when he was 21 and spent his first four and a half years working as a personal assistant to two separate celebrity families.He founded a production company in 2009 which produced the film he later starred in, 'Absence'.Ryan also started a separate company, Mischievious Studios, which shot branded online content for Fortune 500 companies. Mischievious had much viral success, amassing over 25 million views on YouTube. They were featured on an episode of AMC's "The Pitch" in 2013.
