An American, she spent three years training for her degree at London's prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama. In London, she co-adapted, directed and starred in the first approved adaptation of James Baldwin's landmark novel, Giovanni's Room, produced to rave reviews at the Drill Hall Theatre, and was in the BBC miniseries Over Here, about Americans in the RAF.
