Kurt was born Kurt Mason Peterson on June 3, 1988 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His parents were Monica (Kershner), who had been born and raised in Bridgeport (CT), USA, and Mark Peterson, who had been raised in Boston (MA), USA. As the youngest of two children, Kurt enjoyed most sports, especially boxing, but took no real interest in acting.At age 18, after graduating from high school in Shelton (CT), and undecided about his future career he took a few factory jobs. His mother suggested that his forceful personality could make him suitable for a career in acting, and Kurt promptly enrolled at the Hartt School of Drama in Hartford. After completing his freshman year, he joined Chathams's famous Monomoy Theatre in Cap Cop, Massachusetts, undertaking odd jobs and playing every type of role imaginable. His first break came in 2007, when he made his film debut playing teen party animal Robert in "Drop Dead Drunk".In 2009, Kurt moved to New York to pursue a stage career, but was quickly cast in RP Patnik's American film debut 'Amy' (2010).
