Hammer started in the early 1980's as junior producer at Dutch pubcaster AVRO. In subsequent years he turned his interest more towards the artistic side of the business and taught himself video editing. As video editor he became the preferred choice for all of the pubcaster's in-house programs, ranging from current affairs to the pop show Toppop. By the end of the 1980's Hammer joined the first Dutch private radio station Cable One and additionally the first private TV station TV10 (that later became RTL). From 1993 - 1995 he worked as a producer-director for Plaza Media (a production company of the German Kirch Gruppe / Sat 1) Besides video editing, producing and directing, Karl Hammer also writes books and works as an art photographer.
