Karl Hamann was born in Los Angeles and has lived in both northern and southern California. In high school he acted in plays and worked on sets and lighting, but really fell in love with the theater when he became stage manager of his school's 1,300 seat theater, working as crew and lighting operator for national touring companies such as The Martha Graham Dance Company and National Theater for the Deaf. At the University of California, Berkeley, he was a founding member of The Yam Complex, a group of students independently writing, producing and performing plays and street theater. As a senior he co-founded and co-directed a year long improvisational ensemble class inspired by The Open Theater, Grotowski, and Het Werkteater of Amsterdam. After Berkeley, he moved to New York City where he wrote, produced and performed satirical sketch comedy in the comedy duo Hamann/Abrams, at venues such as La Mama Cabaret and The Westbank Downstairs Theater Bar (artistic director, Lewis Black). He now lives in Los Angeles, where he has worked in film and television. He received an LA Weekly Theater Award and a Drama-Logue Award for his performance in the West Coast Premiere of The Adjustment. Karl can also be seen as Yogi Karl in one of the Internet's earliest viral video series, Purrr-fect Yoga.
