She was promoted to anchor in 1996.Martirez joined KTTV Fox 11 from KCNC, the then NBC, now CBS affiliate in Denver where she anchored the morning newscasts since 1988.Previously, she was morning anchor at KSAT, the ABC affiliate in San Antonio, Texas. Earlier, she worked as anchor and reporter at KGBT, the CBS affiliate in Harlingen, Texas. Before that, she was morning anchor and reporter at WXII in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.Martirez began her broadcasting career as weekend anchor and reporter at KOMU in Columbia, Missouri, where ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas trained her.Jean's awards include Emmys for best spot news coverage in Los Angeles and hosting "News for Kids," the syndicated children's news magazine from 1993-1995.Martirez was born in Chicago but raised mainly in St. Louis. She graduated from the University of Missouri where she had classes with fellow journalism student-turned-actor Brad Pitt and was sorority rushed by Kappa Alpha Theta's sister, singer Sheryl Crow.
