Ian was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He is married to the actress Victoria Donovan. He turned professional in 1996 when with no formal training he successfully auditioned for the critically acclaimed, West End Revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in London. He continued in musicals such as Les Miserables, Phantom of The Opera and Notre Dame De Paris playing Quasimodo. He moved into straight theatre when he was offered a role in Edward Halls Macbeth starring Sean Bean. more theatre roles followed including The Warden in The Postman Always rings twice starring Val Kilmer, two seasons at the RSC and a lead role in The National Theatre Of Scotlands multi award winning 'Black Watch" Ian has concentrated on TV and film in the last few years, with supporting roles in World Without End, I am Soldier, Hummingbird and Die Another Day. He played the lead role in the indie gangster flick 'Who Needs Enemies". Ian was a regular in Seasons 1,2 and 3 of Da Vinci's Demons playing Captain Dragonetti. In 2015 Terance Davies Sunset Song was released to huge critical acclaim in which Ian plays the part of Chae Strachan, alongside Peter Mullan and Aggness Deyn. He has also filmed Tommys Honour, directed by Jason Connery and is due for release in 2016. Ian has just finished filming Ripper Street for Amazon Prime. He is represented by Sophie Austin at United Agents and managed by Lena Roklin in the US.
