My father-in-law had brain cancer throughout last year when we were filming and he passed away a week after we wrapped, We did Sonya dying on the beach and then got a call to say we need to come and be with him, and he passed away. It was incredible. If you wrote it, you wouldn't believe it. So much of that was put into that story line and I think that's what people have responded to - the truth of that. Show less «

The good thing about this storyline is we got to really sit in the grief of that. It was difficult, but at the same time there was something beautiful about it. We were in it together. I'm getting emotional. It's sad for Toadie as a character, but it's also sad because you know this part of your life is over; we won't be doing it again. Show less «

On her Neighbours exit: I suggested the story when we knew that Sonya would be leaving. One of my questions was: 'How do we get Toadie and Sonya to separate in a way that's very true to them, after everything they've been through?' My first instinct was: 'I think she has to die. She wouldn't leave any other way'. Although I don't think I thought about how traumatic it would be to play out! But I was involved in the evolution of this storyline. We found such beauty in the storyline, but I am very sad that this person who I feel like I've known for nine years, is now passing away. Show less «

I think by the end of 2017 it was a bit contentious as to what the future of Neighbours was. There was going to need to be changes. The writing out of Sonya was one of those things to keep moving the show forward. Show less «
