Champion diver Elbert Alonzo Root was born on July 20, 1915 in Charleston, South Carolina. Elbert won a silver medal in the 10 meter platform event at the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin, Germany. Root subsequently won the Amateur Athletic Union high board in both 1937 and 1938 before turning professional and touring the country with Billy Rose's Aquacade show. Moreover, Elbert served in the Marine Corps during World War II after enlisting on January 27, 1943 and went on to do additional service in the Marines in the early 1950's. Elbert died at age 67 on July 15, 1983 in Boston, Massachusetts. Show less «
