DJ grew up in Austin, Texas. He attended Linder Elementary, Fulmore Middle School and finally, Travis High School. His interest in film didn't start until his Sophomore year in high school, when the film teacher at the time, Mike Akel Chalk (2006/I) asked students to be extras in Friday Night Lights (2004). Soon after, he joined the after school program (in partnership with the Austin Film Society) and learned some basic skills about film making. During high school he worked as an extra in a few movies, Elvis and Anabelle (2007), Grindhouse (2007) and it was in his Senior year he worked as an extra on Friday Night Lights (2006) Season 1 as a Football Trainer. After High School he worked on Friday Night Lights (2006) Season 2 again as a Football Trainer and considered working on the crew side of projects. After he worked on Will aka Rock On (2009) he started looking for crew positions. His first Production Assistant job was on music videos and independent features.
