Blessed with formidable flair in the backline, he has a nifty sidestep and the ability to find gaps. David worked as a builder after leaving school and played his club rugby for the Nelson club, where he refined his craft. He made the New Zealand Under 20s in 2013 then made the Tasman Makos in 2014 and had several eye- catching performances, scoring four tries in 10 appearances. He was called into the Crusaders wider training squad in 2015 but ended up making his Super debut and played 11 times that year. He made 14 appearances in 2016 before his standout performance for the Super Rugby-winning side in 2017, and was named the Crusaders Player of the Year.
