Conrad von Wangenheim was born Konrad Freiherr von Wangenheim on August 20, 1909 in Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany. An accomplished horse rider, Conrad won a gold medal for the German equestrian team at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Wangenheim became a captain with Cavalry Regiment No. 8 garrisoned at Breig in Silesia, Poland. Conrad served as a German officer on the Eastern Front during World War II; he was captured by the Red Army in July, 1944. Wangenheim was subsequently held as a prisoner of war for almost ten years. His body was found hanged in a prisoner of war camp in Volgograd, Volgograd, Russia on January 28, 1953. Conrad was awaiting repatriation to Germany from the Soviet Union at the time of his death. He was the father of German fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim. Show less «
