Brownsville Station was a 1970s hard-rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. The group first got together at a music store in January, 1969. The original band members were Cub Koda (guitar / vocals), Michael Lutz (guitar / vocals), T.J. Cronley (drums) and Tony Driggins (bass). The group was renowned for its rowdy stage antics and infectiously fiery passion for energetic and unpretentious, straight-up, stirring good-time rock-'n'-roll music.The band released its debut single, "Rock'n'Roll Holiday", in June 1969. Its first album, "No B.S.", came out the next year. Brownsville Station scored its biggest and most beloved hit in 1973 with the terrifically thrilling and rebellious teen attitude anthem classic "Smokin' in the Boy's Room," which peaked at #3 on the Billboard pop charts and sold over two million copies (the song was covered by heavy metal outfit Mötley Crüe in 1985). The equally exciting follow-up single "Kings of the Party" likewise did well; it reached #31 on the Billboard pop charts in 1974. The funky shuffle "Lady (Put the Light on Me)" was a modest local hit in the Detroit area in 1977. The groovy sci-fi novelty number "The Martian Boogie" has been occasionally played on the Barry Hansen--aka "Dr. Demento"--radio show over the years. Brownsville Station continued to tour and perform in concert as well as record several more albums before disbanding in 1979.Sadly, Cub Koda died from kidney disease at the age of 51 on July 1, 2000.
