The Walking Dead - Season 7 Episode 01: The Day Will Come When You Won't Be
Negan decided to punish Rick's group for their crimes against him and used 'Lucille', a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, to beat one of them to death. And the season premiere reveals who is on the receiving end of Lucille.
From a technical aspect, there wasn't really anything wrong with the episode. Greg Nicotero did his usual job as a director and most of the episode looked good. But this story was a failure on an emotional level.
For its flaws, The Day Will Come When You Won't Be... is compelling, tense and emotionally harrowing television. Much as it frustrated me, I was shaking throughout, literally on the edge of my seat.
Yeah, so that was as brutal and wrenching an hour of television as we're ever likely to see. And it had to be. Because the point of this season 7 premiere was to show Rick-and by extension us-that nothing is ever going to be the same now.
If this is what a hit TV series is about -- the slaughter of the sacrificial lamb on occasion to draw us in, to watch, to gape, to write reviews -- then maybe we should ask ourselves why we are watching.
The show's creative team has not lost its taste for jerking fans of the TV show around and it remains committed to refining and retuning the biggest moments from the book, without jettisoning them completely.
