Wilfred Mott first entered the Doctor's life on Christmas day, 2007 when The Doctor was preventing a space-ship from crashing into London. What the Doctor didn't know at the time was that Wilfred was the grandfather of Donna Noble, a young woman he'd rescued exactly a year earlier, and who had since gone on her own little alien-investigations crusade. Donna and Wilfred often watched the night skies together, talking about the alien civilizations that might exist out in them... and keeping an eye out for a blue box. When Donna became the Doctor's traveling companion, Wilfred cheered her on and asked her to bring a little bit of the stars back for him from time to time.Wilfred had fought in World War II, although he never took a life during the fighting. A strongly principled man with huge wells of personal bravery, he would have been a fantastic companion for the Doctor, himself, if only he were younger. In fact, he became the Doctor's companion for one glorious, final adventure. When Donna was returned to Earth with her memories wiped, Wilfred assured the Doctor that he would look out for his grand-daughter and protect her from anything that might bring those memories back (since their return would be fatal). However, he never stopped looking for signs of the Doctor, and when terrible dreams began to plague him, he marshaled all of his elderly friends into helping him search London for any signs of the Doctor's return. They were successful enough that they found him in under twelve hours, prompting the Doctor to ask him Who ARE you? because no one in the history of time has ever found him so quickly. It soon became clear that Wilfred was somehow a central figure in the final showdown between the Doctor and the Master, and the showdown between the Doctor and the Time Lords. The bond between Wilfred and the Doctor grew extraordinarily strong, with Wilfred announcing that he'd be proud to call the Doctor his son, and the Doctor later replying that he'd be equally proud to have had Wilfred as his father. This emotional bond would lead to the Doctor's death and regeneration, when Wilfred became trapped in a containment unit that was about to be flooded with radiation and the only way to save him was for the Doctor to trade places with him.Wilfred saw the Doctor one more time afterward, at Donna's wedding, when the Doctor was making his final round of good-byes to all of his friends and loved ones prior to regenerating.
