George Nada is the main protagonist in John Carpenter's 'They Live', a down on his luck manual worker who rides a train all the way from Denver, Colorado to Los Angeles, California in search of work after ten years in Denver have ended with redundancy and total economic ruin.He is a mostly quiet but observational man, but with a lot on his mind, more than likely his feelings on how life is dealing him a bad hand, as are those in a position to look down on him. So it becomes more of an insult to him when he discovers that the wealthy elite and anyone in any position of authority turns out to be an alien out to decimate and enslave the human race. Once he discovers this, he snaps and can't turn off the trash mouth and the acid wit, a product of a lifetime of being abused by authority and screwed by the system.Although it is debatable how Nada seems to know already how to expertly operate any gun he gets his hands on at any time in the film, it just adds to his coolness. It is possible that he has an extensive history of violence but the film doesn't extend the mythology beyond his claim to be the victim of violent child abuse, which at least most likely explains his attitude, his appetite for conflict and his ability to fight! The role of George Nada wasn't then World Wrestling Federation superstar Rowdy Roddy Piper's debut acting job but his greatest opportunity by far. The wrestler gave one of the best performances ever screened on film to date by a wrestling entertainment star, maybe with the exception of Dwayne The Rock Johnson, which has afforded him a busy career in film and television outside of wrestling entertainment ever since.
