General Dru-Zod was one of Krypton's most trusted military leaders, who was tasked with defending Krypton from all enemies or invaders from the 28 known galaxies. Upon reaching the rank of General, Zod became a respected and impressive strategist, famed for his combat tactics. He was given his own army division, who dedicated themselves to his teachings. It was around this time he met and became close friends to Superman's father Jor-El, one of Krypton's finest scientists and leading council members. Zod's rise to power brought about a change. He became corrupt, ruthless, and violent as he attempted to build the necessary support and military backing required, to take over Krypton's leading council and establish a new empire, under his rule.He initiated a war that was ultimately flawed and, along with his co-conspirators, he was captured and brought before the Krypton leading council. There he faced Jor-El, who would stand as both witness, jury and judge to his crimes, as did all the council members. Found guilty of treason, Jor-El and the council sentenced Zod and his conspirators to spend all eternity in the Phantom Zone, an eternal living void dimension prison created by the Kryptonians. Before sentencing was carried out, Zod vowed vengeance against Jor-El and all family members belonging to the House of El.Many years later, after the destruction of Krypton, Zod has made his way escaping his prison along with his followers and arrived on Earth, where he challenged Superman, Kal-El, the son of Jor-El. His vengeance was then declared on taking over the planet and making it into a new Krypton, which would result to the genocide of every human on Earth with Superman becoming his slave. However, the scrutiny of Zod's plan and effort has fallen over time and time again, as the result of clashing with Superman, ended with a humiliating defeat and ultimately he was returned to the Phantom Zone, where his hatred and vengeance against Superman intensified and continues to vow vengeance against the son of Jor-El.Described after his imprisoning, his talents for combat, tactics and military training were famed almost as much as his callous, sinister and sadistic tendencies. He was cruel and took delight on torturing his enemies' loved ones for the sheer pleasure of it.Among Zod's most fervent followers and lieutenants, from both films and comics, are Ursa, Non, Faora Hu-Ul, Dev-Em, Professor Vakox, Ignition, Tor-An, Kancer, Nadira, Nam-Ek, and Jax-Ur.
