Dr. Eugene Porter is a highly intelligent scientist who initially claimed that he used to work for the federal government-funded Human Genome Project in Washington, DC. He claims to have worked on a top-secret government project that used highly contagious diseases to fight other diseases, and that because of his knowledge, he knows how to kill the virus that creates walkers. He is teamed up with Sgt. Abraham Ford and his companion Rosita, who serve as his escort to Washington, DC. He accidentally shoots up their Army convoy while trying to kill walkers, explaining to Abraham that while he was a highly intelligent scientist, he had no knowledge of how to use a firearm. As a result of the pierced gas tank, the group (which included the rescued Glenn and Tara from Rick's group) had to go and find another car so that they could continue on to Washington, DC. After helping Rick and his group locate the missing Bob and kill Gareth and the remaining Terminus members who tried to hold them all hostage, Eugene reluctantly resumes his journey to DC with Abraham, Rosita, Maggie, and Glenn in a patched-up school bus that was on the church property, and that Abraham fixed.During the journey, something breaks on the bus and it flips, smoking, into a ditch. Walkers descend upon the accident site and Eugene freezes when Tara hands him a knife with which to kill walkers. Eugene goes into an almost catatonic state as the rest of the group kills the walkers. When the group finds shelter sin an abandoned library, Eugene shows off more scientific skills as he makes a lighter out of a gum wrapper. Much later, after Tara caught him spying on Abraham and Rosita having sex, which Eugene says provides comfort and distraction as he enjoys the female form, though he understands that voyeurism is neither his nor Abraham & Rosita's thing. Eugene confesses to Tara that he deliberately tampered with the bus (put crushed glass in the fuel line) and that the accident shouldn't have happened because the bus should have failed before it got to the road. He reasoned that if he doesn't cure the walker disease and save the world, then he will have no value and the group will no longer continue to protect him and share resources; he knows empirically and unequivocally that he could not survive on the outside on his own, so he tampered with the bus in order to remain part of the group.Eugene is a decent person, as shown in season 4 when he refuses to go to DC until Tara and Glenn came safely through the tunnel in their search for Maggie. When Rosita protests, he tells her, After I save the world, I still have to live with myself. He doesn't speak much and when he does, he talks fast and uses a lot of scientific jargon. He seems to be a typical geek with limited social skills. He is confident in his scientific abilities, calling them badass , and seems to like being a part of Rick's group since he was reluctant to leave the church with Abraham in the middle of the night in order to continue to DC. He usually defers to Abraham and Rosita, but will dig in his heels to get his way if he thinks it's right thing to do.When the group breaks into a violent argument on a road that led straight into a large horde of walkers, Eugene finally confessed that he was not a scientist: he just knows a lot of things and was a good liar who, while he didn't know how to stop the virus that causes walkers, wanted to get to DC because he believed that government facility held the best chance for survival, and he wanted to survive. He figured that whoever got him to DC could join him in the facility too, but he lost his nerve the closer they got to DC. He gets badly beaten by Abraham, while Rosita reminds him that a lot of people died to get him to DC. Eugene said he knew, and felt bad about it, but he wanted to survive. In a flashback, it is revealed that Abraham saved Eugene from walkers. When Abraham walked away, Eugene begged him not to go, stating he had a very important mission. Show less «
