Mr. Carson is indeed impressed with Alfred's work ethic, and this earns him opportunities to take on more responsibility. Alfred's morals are also very important to him and he must speak up when he sees something he finds to be wrong. He served in the army during World War I and took a job as a hotel waiter after his discharge.
